Pakistan Hindus, Christians Jointly Address Issue Of Forced Conversion To Islam

LAHORE, Pakistan -- Representatives from the Christian, Hindu and Sikh communities in Pakistan came together May 26 to discussed the issue of forced conversions to Islam.

Bishop Joseph Coutts of Faisalabad told the gathering of about 80 people in Lahore that religious minorities, "especially those living in the southern Punjab and Sindh areas have been forced to convert to Islam."

"It is sad that the religious minorities, particularly Christians and Hindus, are discriminated against and not provided with equal rights, which are stated in the Constitution of Pakistan," Bishop Coutts said.

The Sikh leader also blamed officials' indifference to the plight of minorities for the burning of many churches, Christian villages and other buildings the past several months. He added that the country's "blasphemy laws" often hang threateningly over minority communities "like a sword."

The same Islam that pronounces death for conversion to another religion, forces women married to Muslims to become Muslims too. Forced conversions figures reach between 500 to 600 people a year in Pakistan.
